Almost everybody who follows politics and even most of those who don't, would know who VK Sasikala is! The immediate answer would be that she was the confidante and closest aide of the late TN CM J Jayalalithaa and a behind-the-scenes kingmaker in the AIADMK party. However, not much else is known about her, for she has not contested any elections nor addressed any political rallies. The common belief is that she runs the politics from the shadows. However, there are a number of people who feel that this was not the case and that she only almost always did what the late Jayalalithaa wanted or ordered her to. That is no more the question, for the iconic Iron Lady of Tamil Nadu is no more and Sasikala is in prison.

Sasikala was one of the prime accused in a disproportionate assets case and has been serving her jail term at the Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru. For long, it has been speculated that she is due for release, as she has almost completed serving her term and has also notched up merit points for good behaviour, making an early release possible! Now, reports state that Sasikala's legal counsel - N Raja Senthoor Pandian, had reportedly told the Madras High Court that Sasikala is expected to be released on January 27th! The entire state of TN and all the political parties are working fervently, as the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are slated to happen in the next few months and the parties have already begun campaigning for it. Now, with Sasikala's release imminent, people are waiting with bated breath to see what kind of ripples this is going to create!

One thing for sure is that, there will definitely be a number of changes within the ruling AIADMK party, as both Edappadi Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam have at one time been supporters of Sasikala and at the same time, they also come together to oust her from the party's basic membership! The latter resulted in Sasikala's nephew TTV Dinakaran forming his own party and winning against both the DMK and the AIADMK in the RK Nagar by-elections! However, his victory was achieved only by cutting into the AIADMK's actual vote share and the party would definitely be wary of that. It remains to be seen if Sasikala would re-enter politics actively upon release and if so, whether she would be welcomed back into the AIADMK or if she will have to stake a claim using her loyalists or if she would go with her nephew's party and contest the elections separately. Stay tuned for updates...
