The Kali Puja is one of the most popular festivals of Bengal and despite the COVID-19 Pandemic situation, it was celebrated grandly in various parts of West Bengal. Recently, a photo of Bangladeshi star allrounder and former Captain - Shakib Al Hasan at a Kali Puja Pandal in Kolkata, went viral on social media. However, it looks like this photo has landed him in hot soup! When the photo of Shakib participating in the Kali Puja went viral, many people began issuing death threats to the cricketer, for hurting their religious sentiments! Shakib has just returned to active cricket after serving out a 1-year ban imposed on him by the International Cricket Committee (ICC) for failing to report a corruption approach, in time.
A man by the name of Mohsin Talukdar from the Talukdarpara area in Shahpur under the Sylhet Sadar Upazila region of Bangladesh had posted a Facebook Live, threatening to kill the cricketer and also brandished a sharp weapon in the video. Upon seeing this, Shakib Al Hasan himself took to posting a video on YouTube, explaining the circumstances and also apologising to anybody if he had unknowingly hurt their religious sentiments! There was a misconception that Shakib had inaugurated the Kali Puja, as there were photos of him lighting a ceremonial lamp. However, Shakib cleared the air and explained what really happened.
Shakib Al Hasan's video explained that he had not inaugurated the Kali Puja Pandal but had just participated in the event from another Pandal at the request of one of the organisers, Paresh Pal and that the Puja had been inaugurated long before he had even reached the place. The organiser had requested Shakib to light a diya, as a means of honouring him and photos had been clicked during this. These photos then went viral on social media, giving the appearance that Shakib had inaugurated the event. Shakib's statement also mentioned, "The second issue I want to speak about is sensitive. I want to start by saying I am a proud Muslim and try to practice religion properly. There will be mistakes and that is part of life. I apologize if I have made a mistake and apologize if I have hurt your sentiment. When I was leaving, Paresh da requested me to light a diya. Media requested me to stand for a picture. I stood for two mins in the pandal. The Kali puja was inaugurated much earlier before I arrived by Firhad Hakim." Mohsin Talukdar deleted his threat video but was still arrested by the Rapid Action Battallion (RAB), today!
