Suriya's Soorarai Pottru premiered on November 12 on Amazon Prime Video as a Diwali treat and has been receiving universal acclaim from fans and critics alike. Declared to be one of the finest performances in Suriya’s career, the action drama directed by Sudha Kongara and featuring chart-buster music by G. V. Prakash Kumar had endured several obstacles prior to its release, just as the character Nedumaran Rajangam in the film faces in making it in the aviation industry. Produced jointly by 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment banners, Soorarai Pottru skipped its theatrical release due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film was then announced to be coming out on Amazon Prime on October 30, but got delayed as the makers had faced a delay in obtaining the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Air Force (IAF), considering it revolved extensively around aviation.

Despite 2020 being a year predominantly filled with grief and tragedy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Soorarai Pottru gave Tamil cinema fans plenty of reasons to cheer for this Diwali. Having said that, not all have taken a liking to the film as evident by former Bigg Boss Tamil season 2 contestant and ex radio jockey Vaishnavi Prasad's tweet in which she wrote, "Am I the only person who didn’t enjoy Soorarai Pottru?". She isn't the only one to express such a view on Soorarai Pottru since many replying to her tweet shared similar opinions. Below is Bigg Boss Tamil 2 fame Vaishnavi Prasad's tweet:

Soorarai Pottru is the biggest Tamil venture to have released on any OTT platform as a majority of the fans are celebrating the film, which many have complimented for its intense screenplay, performance and music. Several film personalities too have expressed their happiness after watching the film, while also congratulating the entire team for their dedication and hard work in their presentation. Dubbed in Telugu as Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra, Soorarai Pottru has been inspired from the life of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of the Air Deccan airliner. Apart from Suriya, Aparna Balamurali has delivered a knockout performance, with veteran Telugu actor Mohan Babu, Paresh Rawal, Vivek Prasanna, Karunas among others leaving a lasting impression. The film also has a strong technical team with Niketh Bommi for the cinematography and editing done by Sathish Suriya.
