The IPL is nearing the business end of the tournament and the heat is rising in the race to the Playoffs! Two of the top 3 teams - MI & RCB lost in their most recent games, as did DC in their last 2 games. DC needed a win to consolidate their position at the top of the table while SRH definitely needed a win to even remain in contention for the Playoffs! Shreyas Iyer won the toss and asked Warner's SRH to bat first. SRH were coming off a loss and they made 3 changes to the team, the most significant being dropping Bairstow and bringing in Williamson and asking Saha to take the gloves! DC went in unchanged. Warner and Saha opened the innings for SRH and got off to a flier! All the bowlers were being taken for runs but the batsmen reserved their best for Rabada, whose first over - the last of the Powerplay, was despatched for 22 runs to bring SRH to 77/0 in 6 overs! This was their best ever Powerplay score and Warner had also notched up yet another 50 in the IPL, along the way.
SRH brought up their 100 by the end of the 9th over and looked set for lots more when Warner was taken out by Ashwin for 66 off just 34 balls! This did not slow down SRH but kicked Saha into a higher gear as he began pulling out a variety of strokes and finding the boundaries regularly. He got to his 50 off the 11th over, which went for 14 runs! Saha got to a fluent 87 before mistiming a shot and falling to Anrich Nortje. This got together Pandey and Williamson at the crease with over 5 overs to go. The 2 experienced batsmen got into the groove and Pandey began taking the aggressor's role with Williamson playing perfect foil and turning over the strike to him. By the end of their innings, SRH had gotten to a mammoth 219/2, setting DC a target of 220 to win and go to the top of the table! This would definitely need some good chasing and the man in form - Dhawan had to fire on all cylinders and notch up another match winning century!
Unfortunately, this was not to happen, as Dhawan got out for a Golden Duck off the 3rd ball of the very first over! DC decided to shuffle their batting order and promoted Stoinis to come out at 1-down. However, the experiment failed as he fell for just 5 runs, in the second over itself! Again, Hetmeyer was promoted to blast away and he & Rahane put some runs on the board together and by the end of the Powerplay, DC were 54/2 but way below the required run rate! Rashid Khan came on to bowl the 7th over and immediately removed Hetmeyer off his very first ball and got Rahane too, by the end of the over! Though DC's batting was effectively broken, Pant and Shreyas Iyer were at the crease and they are known to be more than capable of pulling off the impossible! However, Rashid Khan was unplayable and Iyer too got out to Shankar for a tame shot. Axar Patel fell next to Rashid Khan and all hope was lost for DC. Pant waged a lone battle and that too ended right after Rabada was bowled by Natarajan as Sandeep Sharma had Pant nicking behind, with a faint tickle! Deshpande showed some spunk but Ashwin and Nortje reeled over and SRH handed DC a comprehensive defeat by a whopping margin of 88 runs, with an over to spare! DC's NRR took a major hit while SRH's got a massive boost. Saha was awarded the Player of the Match, for his stellar knock! SRH move to 6th place on the Points Table and are the team with the second best NRR.
