India was supposed to tour Australia for a full series including Tests, ODIs and T20Is. However, the happening of this tour was in question after the two boards - Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) & Cricket Australia (CA) failed to arrive at a consensus as to the number of days of quarantine required for the players, upon their arrival in the country! It looks like things have finally fallen into place, as the BCCI has now announced the squads for all three formats of the game. The most notable omissions in the squads are Rohit Sharma (who plays all three formats for India) and Ishant Sharma, who is the spearhead of the Indian Test attack! However, this is because both the players picked up injuries in the ongoing IPL and have been sidelined. Though Rohit Sharma has not been named in the squads, we hear that Ishant's and his progress is being monitored and that they would be a part of the squad if they are fit to travel!
There are some new faces as well as returning faces in the squads for the Australia series, which is set to happen in December & January. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has been called up to the Test squad and KL Rahul & Kuldep Yadav will also be returning to the Test squad. Rohit has picked up a hamstring injury but is expected to return to action soon, while Ishant is recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, after returning from the IPL with a calf injury. Rishabh Pant has been selected only for the Test squad and is not a part of the limited overs squad. Rahane will be Kohli's deputy for the tests while KL Rahul dons the mantle in the limited overs. The Indian squads and training staff would be flying to Australia from the UAE, immediately after the IPL final on November 10th. The tour is expected to start on November 27th in Sydney with the ODIs first, to be followed by the T20Is and then the Tests! Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner from Tamil Nadu, who plays for KKR in the IPL, has earned his maiden call-up to the national side for the T20Is.
Sanju Samson will be the backup wicket-keeper for Rahul in the T20 squad while there is no backup named for the ODIS, though the rest of the squad will also be in the same location. Kuldeep, who returns to the Tests and ODIs, has not been named for the T20Is. Washington Sundar makes it to the T20Is, as does Deepak Chahar. Shardul Thakur has been named in the ODI squad, along with Shubman Gill. The only players who are part of all three squads are Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. Apart from these players, Gill, Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal, Chahal, Shreyas Iyer and Navdeep Saini feature in both the limited overs squads!
