The Indian Premier League 2020 is underway and the tournament has already crossed over half-way! Kolkata Knight Riders have so far played 7 matches with four wins and three losses, not counting today's game against the Mumbai Indians. The KKR's captain Dinesh Karthik has been shuffling around the middle order so far but has not been having a great time with the bat. He has just scored 108 runs so far, including a 58, in the seven innings he has batted. However, he has had an impressive strike rate of 136! Earlier today, KKR put out a media statement mentioning that Dinesh Karthik had 'handed over' the captaincy to Eoin Morgan, to focus more on his batting and towards contributing more to the team.
A tweet by KKR read, "DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap," says CEO and MD @VenkyMysore. The KKR Chief Executive Venky Mysore said the franchise was surprised by Karthik's decision and put a positive spin on this development, terming this as just a captaincy swap. He further added, "We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes."
Dinesh Karthik was purchased by KKR in 2018, for INR 7.4 Crores and appointed as Captain. They finished 2018 in the third place and on 5th place in 2019. After being a part of KKR, Karthik has scored 859 runs at a strike rate of 146 with five half-centuries. Though these numbers are very decent, there are speculations that Karthik has not been very happy with his batting position, so far. Even before the season started, Karthik had mentioned that his position in the batting order was something that the team were discussing. KKR has mentioned that Morgan was chosen as he has a proven captaincy record and has been very good with the bat this season and is the second leading scorer for KKR with 175 runs at a strike rate of 130. Already, this change seems to be working for KKR as Morgan won the toss against today's match against MI and decided that KKR were going to bat first!
