Since yesterday (August 29), there have been a wide range of reports speculating that Ajith Kumar's upcoming film, AK 61 will have a theatrical release for the festive occasion of Pongal in January 2023. Initially, the film was said to hit the screens in December 2022, but industry insiders now suggest that the film could probably release for Pongal. If this is the case, AK 61 will have to clash with Thalapathy Vijay's next, Varisu. The Vamshi Paidipally directorial has already been announced as a Pongal release and the fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing the film in the theatres. This is not the first time we see a Vijay - Ajith film locking horns in the cinemas.

It has happened quite a few times before, to be precise, on 8 occasions. Vijay and Ajith's films have released on the same day, clashing at the box office on a total of 8 occasions and here are the details about it.

Coimbatore Mappillai - Vaanmathi (Both the films released for the Pongal weekend with Vaanmathi releasing three days after Coimbatore Mappillai's release)
Kushi - Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven (May 19, 2000)
Friends - Dheena (January 14, 2001)
Bagavathi - Villain (November 4, 2002)
Thirumalai - Anjaneya (October 24, 2003)
Aadhi - Paramasivan (January 14, 2006)
Pokkiri - Aazhvar (January 12, 2007)
Jilla - Veeram (January 10, 2014)

One could definitely not forget the Jilla VS Veeram clash which set the box office in fire. It was an epic clash where the celebrations were at the peak, acting as one of the iconic moments in the Tamil cinema's trade. While an official announcement on the release plans of AK 61 is awaited, if the speculations turn true, the Varisu - AK 61 clash will be the ninth between the two stars. AK 61 is directed by H Vinoth who is working with Ajith for the third consecutive time after Nerkonda Paarvai and Valimai. Manju Warrier plays the female lead in AK 61.
