The world had come to a standstill more than a year back after the deadly novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China, spread around the globe claiming millions of lives, including causing a massive economic downfall in several nations. As a permanent cure for COVID-19 is yet to be found, preventive measures are being adopted, with vaccinations being introduced to immunize the masses against the infectious disease. Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first on Monday to take the Covaxin vaccination, with many others following suit, including Makkal Needhi Maiam President and actor Kamal Haasan also receiving the vaccine shot at Chennai on Tuesday.

Taking to his social media pages, Kamal Haasan shared a video of receiving the COVID-19 shot and informed followers that the vaccination will offer protection to him, including others. He tweeted, "I received my vaccination for coronavirus at the Sri Ramachandra Hospital. All those who care for themselves, including others should go get themselves vaccinated. For now, the vaccine shot for the human body has been done and the vaccination against corruption will be done next month. Get ready."

Government health facilities are offering the vaccinations free-of-cost and on a payment basis in private health facilities. Private medical institutions have been given the authorization by the Centre to charge Rs. 150 for the vaccines and Rs. 100 for service charges. Nearly 10,000 hospitals around the country have been empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY, while 687 hospitals come under the CGHS that can be used by States as COVID Vaccination Centres (CVCs).
