The Chennai Metro Train service was introduced as a means of helping the city's residents travel easier. However, the cost of the Metro tickets made it such that not everybody could avail these services and only a section of the citizens could. The Metro services had remained suspended for an extended period of time due to the COVID-19 Corona Virus Pandemic but they were resumed recently. Now, as a means of boosting the numbers of people travelling by Metro trains, the Tamil Nadu government has come up with an innovative plan. The TN Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has made a recent announcement, slashing the Metro train ticket fares.

In a latest announcement released by the TN CM, he has announced the reduction of Metro Train ticket fares and that they would be implemented from as early as February 22nd! The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has also weighed in that these reduction in fares would definitely facilitate an increase in the number of Metro train users! The announcement from the CM states that as per the request by the public to reduce the Metro train fares, the TN Government has taken this decision. The minimum fare for the Metro trains will continue to remain at Rs. 10 while the maximum fare has been reduced from Rs. 70 to Rs. 50! The number of passengers on Metro trains had reduced to about 10,000 per day after the service resumption post the COVID lockdown, while before the lockdown it had been at around 1.2 lakhs per day!

The CMRL has also announced that a number of share auto services have been increased along the newly opened stretch of the Metro rail, to facilitate last mile connectivity. The Stage-I of the Chennai Metro Rail project was completed in 2015 and services began on 29/06/2015! Now, the CMRL has completed 5 years of service and is entering into its 6th year. The distance covered by the Chennai Metro in the Stage-I was 54.05 kms and the Stage-II work which is underway, is expected to cover upto 118.90 kms. Over 7.25 Crore passengers have travelled on the Chennai Metro trains, till now! Many other discounts like including the newly opened Metro train route for the existing fares itself for monthly pass and daily pass holders, have also been announced. One of the biggest discounts announced has been that on Sundays and public holidays, the Metro Train fares will be slashed to 50% of their original rates!
