Avatar: The Way of Water is an upcoming sci-fi epic film directed by James Cameron and produced under the banner of 20th Century Studios. It is the second film in James Cameron's Avatar franchise, following 2009's Avatar. Avatar: The Way of Water, has been confirmed for a worldwide theatrical release on 16 December 2022.

Yesterday (September 7), with only 100 days to go for the film's release, the official Twitter handle of Avatar shared a new poster for the upcoming film. They attached a caption along with it that read, "In 100 days, experience #AvatarTheWayOfWater only in theaters December 16. " Check it out:

The film will feature Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprising their roles from the original film, with the introduction of some new cast members including Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, Oona Chaplin, CJ Jones, and Vin Diesel.

Cameron made a statement back in 2006 saying he would like to make sequels for Avatar if it ever became successful. Following the instant widespread success of the first film that took the world and the box office by storm, he announced the first two sequels in 2010 with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release.

The addition of three further sequels and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film motion capture scenes underwater (a feat never accomplished before) and the sudden uprising of the pesky COVID-19 pandemic led to significant delays as the crew needed more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects.

While Avatar: The Way of Water will be hitting the screens soon, its following three sequels will be released on 20 December 2024, 18 December 2026, and 22 December 2028.
