It's OFFICIAL - the title for the Avatar 2 has been announced to be Avatar: The Way of Water. The title of Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron's highly-anticipated epic science fiction film was announced at CinemaCon on Wednesday, with 20th Century Fox also dropping a poster on social media along with the reveal of the release date. Sharing the title look poster, the makers wrote, "Just announced at CinemaCon, Avatar: The Way of Water only in theatres December 16, 2022." Check out the announcement below:

Attendees at CinemaCon were given an early glance at the Avatar: The Way of Water teaser trailer, which will be officially released in cinemas ahead of Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The upcoming sequel will see Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald reprising their roles from 2009's Avatar, with Sigourney Weaver set to be returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, and CJ Jones. 

Speaking about the Avatar: The Way of Water, producer Jon Landau said, "We need to make sure [audiences] have an experience they can't get anywhere else, and that needs to be exclusively in theatres." Director James Cameron, who is currently in New Zealand with the post-production works on the film, made an appearance in a pre-recorded video and added to the excitement. He told exhibitors, that the film is "designed for the biggest screen and the most immersive 3D available," while also informing that he "set out to test the limits of what cinema can do." Furthermore, it has been announced that Disney is re-releasing 2009's Avatar in theatres on September 23 ahead of The Way of Water.

As per the official synopsis of Avatar: The Way of Water, "Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their planet."
