On the work front, Arun Prabhu made heads turn in his directorial debut, Aruvi, in 2017, which was produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. The socio-political drama turned out to be a stellar box office success, with fans and critics showering massive praise for its story, performances, and technical aspects. The film's story revolved around the events in Aruvi's life, a rebellious young woman who exposes the misogynistic and consumerist attitudes of the masses in modern civilization. Aruvi also marked the debut of actress Aditi Balan in the lead role, with her performance going on to be declared to be one of the best in the last decade, while Lakshmi Gopalswami, Anjali Vardhan, Pradeep Antony, and Mohammad Ali Baig appeared in crucial roles.

Arun Prabhu's next film, Vaazhl, was released last year and was produced by actor-producer Sivakarthikeyan. The film, which came out under the Sivakarthikeyan Productions banner, was released through the streaming service SonyLIV in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and starred Pradeep Anthony and newcomer TJ Bhanu in the lead roles, with the music composed by Pradeep Kumar. Vaazhl was shot in more than 100 new and unexplored locations across India and at islands in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
