'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi has garnered a reputation over the years of keeping himself working on one film after another in quick succession, with the versatile actor hardly taking any big breaks in between. Seen only in a special appearance in Oh My Kadavule and an extended cameo in Ka Pae Ranasingam this year, the shooting on a number of Vijay Sethupathi's upcoming projects had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has also led to the delay in the release of 'Thalapathy' Vijay's highly-anticipated mass action venture, Master, in which he plays the antagonist.

Some other notable big films of Vijay Sethupathi also include director Seenu Ramasamy's Maamanithan, S. P. Jananathan's Laabam, Venkata Krishna Roghanth's Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir, Delhi Prasad Deenadayal's Tughlaq Durbar, Vignesh Shivn's Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal, Kadaisi Vivasayi under Kaaka Muttai fame M. Manikandan's direction, Mani Ratnam's anthology Navarasa for Netflix, a Tamil film with Taapsee Pannu, the Malayalam venture 19(1)(a) opposite Nithya Menen, including Uppena in Telugu, followed by Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha in Hindi. Among these ventures, it has now been announced that Vijay Sethupathi has wrapped filming his portions on Laabam, with the actor signing off by taking a group picture with the film's entire crew.

Laabam marks Vijay Sethupathi's second association with director S. P. Jananathan after their Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai in 2015. Vijay Sethupathi will be seen playing the role of a social activist in Laabam in which he has been paired opposite Shruti Haasan, while popular Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu is the antagonist. Featuring music composed by D. Imman, the upcoming film also has a talented supporting cast that includes the likes of Sai Dhanshika, Kalaiyarasan, Ramesh Thilak, Prithivi Rajan, Daniel Annie Pope, Nithish Veera, Jai Varman among others. The Laabam trailer, which released a while back received a strong response, with many complimenting the film's theme and also for addressing key social issues. A joint production venture of Vijay Sethupathi Productions and 7Cs Entertertainment Pvt.Ltd banners, the film has Ramji for cinematography, followed by N.Ganesh Kumar for editing, V. Selvakumar for art direction and Don Ashok overseeing the stunts.
