A film that has gone on to become a cult classic, Vada Chennai, released in 2018 turned out to be a commercial success, while also receiving a staggering positive critical response from fans and critics alike. The film marked the third-time reunion of National Award winners Vetri Maaran directing Dhanush, who produced it under his Wunderbar Films banner. Featuring chart-buster songs and an intense background score by Santhosh Narayanan, the action gangster crime drama set in the backdrop of North Chennai was the first installment of a planned trilogy.

During the Vada Chennai audio launch in 2018, it was revealed that around 20 percent of Vada Chennai 2 had already been shot, before Dhanush and director Vetri Maaran shifted gears to work on their Asuran, which went on to become a box office blockbuster. Towards the end of the first film, the sequel is teased when the title appears as Vada Chennai - Anbuvin Ezhuchi, leaving fans in an excited mode. After there were rumors that the sequel was not going to be made, Dhanush himself last year issued a statement that the film was very much on and announcements regarding it would be made by him.

In that light, director Vetri Maaran participated in the inaugural function of the Manidham Pazhagu group's office in New Washermanpet in Chennai on Thursday where he addressed media persons. Upon being queried about Vada Chennai 2, he stated that he is currently engaged in script work for the film, while assuring that it will release soon. Fans have been super excited to hear these words from the ace director as they have been wanting to see the sequel come out for a long time. Come October 17 will mark the second year since the first film was released and whether an announcement or a statement in regard to the sequel will be made remains to be seen.

Vetri Maaran is currently working on several projects among which include the highly-anticipated Vaadivaasal starring Suriya under Kalaipuli S. Thanu's V Creations banner. He will also be doing two films for producer Elred Kumar's RS Infotainment - one reuniting him with Dhanush for the fifth time and the next being an adaptation of late lyricist and poet Na. Muthukumar's Pattamboochi Virpavan poem, which will introduce comedian Soori as a hero. Vetri Maaran also revealed that he is looking to team up with 'Thalapathy' Vijay for a film, a combination fans have wanted for a long time, with the statement since then raising expectations for the project to grand heights.
