Match 21 of IPL 2020 pit the Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders! KKR's captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss and decided to bat first against MS Dhoni's CSK! There was one change in the CSK side as they replaced Piyush Chawla with Karn Sharma! KKR started on a positive note with a wide followed by a four! After a tight over by Sam Curran, Rahul Tripathi who was promoted up the order to open in place of Sunil Narine and Shubman Gill took the 3rd over apart for 15 runs and followed it up with another 11 runs in the 4th over! Shardul Thakur was brought on to bowl the 5th over and he struck with his very 3rd ball and got Gill edging to Dhoni! At the end of the Powerplay, KKR had reached a very good 52/1! Karn Sharma's first over went for 12 runs but he came back strongly with Nitish Rana's wicket off the first ball of his next over! Narine walked out next and he & Tripathi smashed Bravo's over for 19 runs taking KKR to 93/2 after 10 overs!
Karn Sharma next removed Narine for 17 off 9 balls to a wonderful partnership catch between Jadeja and Faf du Plessis, on the boundary! KKR seemed set for a huge score but CSK's bowlers began to slow things down and kept them quiet with regular wickets. Sam Curran then removed Eoin Morgan to bring in Russel with 6 overs to go. However, CSK removed Russel early, with Thakur claiming his 2nd wicket but Tripathi was still going all guns blazing! Finally, birthday boy Bravo removed Tripathi for a well compiled 81 off 51 balls! Cummins swung his bat around for a 6 and a 4 but Curran returned to take out Captain Dinesh Karthik to a juggled catch by Thakur. Bravo bowled the last over and was incredible, giving away just 5 runs and taking 2 wickets with the last KKR batsman getting run-out! CSK had been set a target of 168 to win and it was a good comeback by their bowlers to restrict KKR's batsmen!
Faf du Plessis continued his rich vein of form and stroked away quite a few boundaries and Watson too seemed to pick up from where he left off in the last match! However, Shivam Mavi removed Faf for 17 off 10 balls but Rayudu and Watson combined to put on a sterling partnership and took CSK to 90/1 off 10 overs! Narine was introduced only as late as the 12th over and KKR had begun to slow down the CSK innings, draining the runs. Nagarkoti came back to remove Rayudu in the 13th over right after the Powerplay! Dhoni promoted himself and walked out to join Watson who went on to raise his second consecutive half century. Unfortunately, he got out the very next ball to Narine and KKR's decision of holding back Narine for the latter stage of the match began to be proving right! Dhoni and Sam Curran played out a few tight overs before Curran opened up and smashed Narine for a 6 and a 4. However, the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy took out Dhoni in the 17th over and things began looking grim for CSK. Andre Russel was introduced in the 18th over and he took Curran's wicket with his very first ball! Jadeja and Jadhav could not get going and the KKR bowlers strangled the runs, leaving CSK needing 26 runs from the last over. However, CSK could only manage 15 runs and went down by 10 runs. Rahul Tripathi was adjudged the Player of the Match and KKR moved to 3rd place on the Points Table!
