Being at the bottom of the table and having won just 1 of their first 5 games, Kings XI Punjab rung in a lot (3) of changes to their team to target the top-heavy Sunrisers Hyderabad batting order. Davind Warner won the toss and decided to bat first, going with the recent trend of captains in the IPL! This provided rich dividends for SRH as both Warner and Jonny Bairstow got going from the first over itself! Though Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammed Shami kept things tight, Sheldon Cottrell was wayward and gave away too many runs. At the end of the Powerplay, SRH were on 58 for no loss. By the end of the 10th over, SRH had raced away to 100 runs and had still not lost any wickets. The 11th over from Maxwell was thoroughly dismantled by Bairstow, and went for 20 runs. By the time Warner reached his 50 in the 14th over, Bairstow had gotten himself to 94 and SRH were 154 for no loss!
The second time-out was taken after the 15th over and it seems to have disturbed the batsmen's concentration as the 1st ball of the 16th over saw Warner miscuing and getting out. Bairstow departed a couple of balls later for a well-played 97! Manish Pandey fell off the first ball of the next over and Bishnoi would have had his third wicket if Nicholas Pooran had held onto a tough catch on the boundary. However, he still got him a couple of balls later and wickets began falling fast and thick for SRH and the run rate was slowing down. Abishek Sharma came in and swung some boundaries in the 19th over before Williamson smashed a couple of boundaries for himself, taking SRH to 201! KXIP had pulled back the scoring with some wickets towards the end. KXIP would have fancied the target, considering both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are among the top run-getters in the tournament!
KXIP had a decent start but things started unravelling from the 2nd over itself, as a confusion between KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal lead to Agarwal being run-out. Simran Singh came out at No. 3, but he fell to a cracker of a catch in the 5th over. Pooran walked out to join Rahul and KXIP reached 45/2 in their Powerplay. Pooran began opening up with a couple of 6s but KL Rahul fell to a top-edge. Rashid Khan was introduced in the 8th over and he began squeezing the runs, almost immediately. Pooran decided to unleash all his fury onto Abdul Samad and thrashed the 9th over bowled by him for 28 runs and also getting to the fastest 50 of the tournament so far. With Maxwell and Pooran at the crease, there was still some belief but Maxi got run-out to an amazing throw from Priyam Garg and KXIP had slipped to 105/4! Mujeeb got out to a major confusion after he was given not out but the umpires reviewed for a bump ball and was given out but he reviewed for not having hit the ball which the snickometer nullified. Pooran was still at the crease but he too fell to Rashid for 77. Wickets began falling thick & fast and with runs also drying up, KXIP were all-out for 132, in the 17th over itself! Bairstow's belligerent knock earned him the Player of the Match award!
