The Indian cricketers just finished playing in the Indian Premier League, with the current season being held in the UAE due to rising COVID concerns in India. Many young Indian cricketers who performed well in IPL 2020 had been selected as part of the Indian squad which is set to tour Australia and were given an opportunity to travel with the squad. The Indian touring squad arrived in Australia on November 13th and have been in a 14-day quarantine, since. One such player who impressed the selectors during the IPL and secured his chance to play for the Indian team is pace bowler Mohammed Siraj, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this season!
Mohammed Siraj, who has been selected as part of the Indian Test squad and is set to take part in the matches against Australia, has suffered a severe blow. Siraj has lost his father Mohammed Ghouse (53), who breathed his last on Friday after losing his fight to a lung ailment. On coming to know of this sad news, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had given Siraj an option to fly back to India to perform the last rites but the young player decided to remain back in Australia. Ghouse is said to have been very instrumental in Siraj's rise to becoming the player he is today, as their family had a very modest background but Ghouse took it upon himself to support Siraj's dreams of making it to the national team.
Siraj has so far played in three T20s and one ODI for India and has now been named as part of the Test squad, as the fifth pace bowler, behind Bumrah, Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. He will be competing with another young pacer - Navdeep Saini, for a spot in the team. Siraj had a stellar IPL 2020 with 11 Wickets in 9 games for RCB, which included an outstanding spell of 3 Wickets for just 8 runs, against the Kolkata Knight Riders. We pray for Mohammed Ghouse's soul to rest in peace and hope that Mohammed Siraj and the bereaved family find the strength to cope with this huge loss!
