The Indian Premier League (IPL) is known the world over as the most popular and highly competitive T20 leagues, with players from almost all countries taking part in it. The IPL always produces top quality cricket and the players give it their all on the field. The latest edition of the IPL concluded just a couple of days back in the UAE, where it was held to keep the players safe with the COVID-19 Pandemic still spreading across India. IPL 2020 was a roaring success and saw defending champions Mumbai Indians winning the trophy once again, to achieve a record five-time winners tag! MI defeated the young first time finalists Delhi Capitals, with a comprehensive victory. The Delhi Capitals were lead by the swashbuckling youngster Shreyas Iyer and coached by the legendary World Cup winning Australian captain Ricky Ponting!
Ponting has been known for being a very passionate player and has never backed away from being vocal about his thoughts on the field. There was an incident between Ponting and the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli, who is also the captain of Team India. Kohli himself is known to be quite feisty on the field but has toned down his aggression on the field, in recent years. RCB and DC played their second encounter against each other, on November 2nd! Their first outing against each other saw DC coming up trumps by 59 runs and the second match also saw RCB being defeated by 6 wickets. However, during the course of the match, there was an on field altercation between the DC coach Ricky Ponting and RCB captain Virat Kohli. This was shown in the visuals but the reason behind this was not known, as umpires interfered and cleared the situation.
Now, in a new video posted on his YouTube channel, DC player Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed the reason behind what happened between Kohli and Ponting. Ashwin has stated that during the match, he had suffered some discomfort with his back and had to go off the field immediately after finishing an over and that Kohli was not happy with it and took it up with the umpires. However, Ricky Ponting seemed to take offense with this and had a verbal duel with Kohli. Ashwin stated, "I had a back problem when I ran. It was a terrible pain. They took MRI scans and it was traced to a nerve pull to back. I went off after bowling. And you know Ricky, he won’t leave any fight. And when RCB questioned, he said we aren’t like that etc. Heat of moment." This match also marked the first time ever that Ashwin dismissed Kohli in an IPL match.
