Veteran actor Vikram Gokhale died due to multi-organ failure in a Pune hospital on Saturday afternoon, November 26. He was 77. "We are saddened to announce that the noted actor Mr. Vikram Gokhale passed away today at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital due to multi-organ failure. Our deep condolences," an official statement from Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital read as follows. The actor was hospitalized for some time before being put on life support. According to reports, Vikram Gokhale's body will be kept at Bal Gandharva Sabagruha for family and friends to pay their final respects after which the last rites will be taking place at 6 p.m. later today at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Pune. 

The hospital's PRO had earlier on Saturday issued a statement regarding Vikram Gokhale's condition and said that his health had "deteriorated." There were also rumors earlier this week about the actor's passing away, which his daughter denied. The news of the actor's demise has come as a big shock to many leading celebrities in Bollywood, who have paid their tributes on social media. Hindi films superstar Akshay Kumar expressed his condolences on Twitter and wrote, "Very sad to know of the demise of Vikram Gokhale ji. Worked with him in films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Mission Mangal, had so much to learn from him. Om Shanti 🙏". Likewise, veteran actor Anupam Kher too was heartbroken at the news of Vikram Gokhale’s passing and paid his respects on social media. 

Vikram Gokhale was one of the most respected actors in the film industry having worked in Hindi and Marathi films, including playing pivotal roles in Amitabh Bachchan's Agneepath and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, starring Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ajay Devgn. He is best known among Tamil cinema audiences for starring in Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram (2000) in the role of Maharaja, while also playing the actor's maternal uncle Ranganath in Aalavandhan (2001). Vikram Gokhale has also starred in several television shows over the course of his 40-year career.
