Mani Ratnam's magnum opum Tamil epic period action drama fillm Ponniyin Selvan: I has garnered a great name for itself ever since its worldwide theatrical release on September 2022. This magnificent spectacle  received critical acclaim from film critics, who praised the direction, performances of the cast, score, visuals, and faithfulness to the novel. It grossed over Rs. 257 crore in just 4 days and broke multiple records cementing itself as the highest opening of 2022 for an Indian title as well as the highest all-time opening for a Tamil-language film.

But it did not just stop there. With its massive worldwide release, the film also broke records at other parts of the world as well. According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the film is doing great business in Tamil and in the overseas market as well. Ponniyin Selvan had a record opening in the land of our ex-occupants, United Kingdom.  

Produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, it is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. The film stars a stellar ensemble cast consisting of  Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban and Lal. The music was composed by Isaipuyal A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.
