Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's magnum opus, Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which released earlier this year, is currently one of the biggest blockbusters in Tamil cinema history and has also garnered massive critical acclaim. The epic historical action drama pan-Indian film produced by Lyca Productions in association with Madras Talkies ended on a cliffhanger note and teased the sequel, Ponniyin Selvan: 2, which now finally has a release date. On Wednesday, December 28, the makers of the upcoming film unveiled a special announcement teaser informing fans that Ponniyin Selvan: 2 will release in theatres worldwide on April 28, 2023.
This is the first official confirmation for the Ponniyin Selvan: 2 release date and the announcement will no doubt come as big joyous news for fans, who are waiting with bated breath to witness the continuation of the events from the first film, which collected more than 500 crores in worldwide box office collections in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada languages it had released. Based on acclaimed Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's Ponnyin Selvan novels, the upcoming sequel will once again feature music by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman, whose songs and background score are still being celebrated and continue to reign at the top of the charts.
The core cast of Ponniyin Selvan: 2 will be seen reprising their roles once again starting with 'Chiyaan' Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, followed by Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Trisha as Kundavai Devi, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is appearing in dual roles as Nandini and Mandakini Devi. The sequel also sees the return of the ensemble cast that appeared in the first film among whom are Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, R. Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Jayaram, Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Lal, Rahman, Kishore, Ashwin Kakumanu, Nizhalgal Ravi, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Jayachitra, Vidya Subramanian, Mohan Raman, and Riyaz Khan to name a notable few.
