Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's highly-anticipated Ponniyin Selvan: 2 released on April 28 amidst huge expectations and has taken a spectacular opening in theatres worldwide. Produced by Lyca Productions in association with Madras Talkies, early estimates indicate the epic historical action adventure film has earned around Rs. 32-35 crores on day one on Friday across all the languages it has been released in India. The advance bookings for PS: 2 were largely positive and tickets got sold out like hot cakes in quick time, with fans and critics singing praises for Mani Ratnam's latest directorial.
Having taken a stellar start at the box office, Ponniyin Selvan: 2 is one of the most debated topics on social media since yesterday among fans, with many drawing comparisons to acclaimed Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's best-selling books upon which the film has been adapted for the big screen. The sequel has come out amidst massive excitement after Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which ended on a cliffhanger note after its release last year, broke several box office records grossing more than Rs 500 crores at the global box office, while turning out to be the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of all-time and the 15th highest-grossing Indian film of all-time.
Featuring music composed by Academy Award winner A. R. Rahman, Ponniyin Selvan: 2 has the lead stars from the first installment reprising their roles starting with 'Chiyaan' Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyadevan, Trisha as Kundavai, Aishwarya Lekshmi as Poonguzhali, Sobhita Dhulipala as Vaanathi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in dual roles as Nandini and Mandakini. The film also sees the return of the ensemble cast members Prakash Raj, Prabhu, R. Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Lal, Radhakrishnan Parthiban, Vikram Prabhu, Rahman, Kishore, Ashwin Kakumanu, among others.
