Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: 2 has taken a spectacular start at the box office as the film has collected 100+ crores in worldwide box office collections, Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies have announced. The epic historical action adventure film featuring music composed by A. R. Rahman has achieved the numbers in the first two days of its release and the collections are bound to increase considering tickets have already been sold out in advance bookings for the days ahead. Based on acclaimed Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's best-selling Ponniyin Selvan books, Mani Ratnam's big screen adaptation is being discussed by a large section of fans, who continue to debate about the film for its various plot elements, character arcs and the major events in the narrative. The sequel has come out in theatres after the phenomenal response to Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which ended on a cliffhanger note after its release last year. The first installment subsequently went on to gross more than 500 crores at the global box office, while also becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022. All sights will now be on Ponniyin Selvan: 2 to trump the collections of the 2022 blockbuster, which incidentally is also the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of all-time and the 15th highest-grossing Indian film of all-time.
Ponniyin Selvan: 2 has the lead stars from the first film reprising their roles starting with 'Chiyaan' Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyadevan, Trisha as Kundavai, Aishwarya Lekshmi as Poonguzhali, Sobhita Dhulipala as Vaanathi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in dual roles as Nandini and Mandakini, while the ensemble cast sees the return of Prakash Raj, Prabhu, R. Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Lal, Radhakrishnan Parthiban, Vikram Prabhu, Rahman, Kishore, Ashwin Kakumanu, among others.
