RJ Balaji made his debut as a lead actor with the political drama, LKG which became a solid success at the box office. Following that, he made his directorial debut along with another newcomer, NJ Saravanan through Mookuthi Amman that starred lady superstar Nayanthara in the lead role. Mookuthi Amman had its direct digital release on Disney + Hotstar platform and it opened to a good reception from the family audiences. The film could not release in theatres as planned due to the global pandemic. During the time of the film's release, RJ Balaji had said that he would take a break and start working on his next project after a few months. It looks like the developments have started to happen and details regarding his next project are out. RJ Balaji will be playing the lead role in the Tamil remake of the critically acclaimed blockbuster Hindi film, Badhaai Ho.

RJ Balaji will be reprising the role played by Ayushmann Khurrana, while he will also be directing the film, along with his Mookuthi Amman director, NJ Saravanan. RJ Balaji confirmed the news to Times Of India and he was quoted as saying, "Yes, I am doing the remake. I am writing the script and will be co-directing the film with NJ Saravanan, who was also part of my Mookuthi Amman. I will be playing Ayushmann Khurrana's role in this film. After doing a political satire and a devotional film, I felt a family drama would be an ideal genre for me at this stage. I am currently writing the film. I am planning on altering some elements in the original script to suit our audiences.".

As Balaji says, it looks like the pre production works are happening in full swing. An official announcement regarding the project is expected to be made in April or May.
