Spirituality lies in kind gestures: Suresh Heblikar

Suresh Heblikar says he has considered spirituality as not being part of religion for a long time. He says, "Belief in God has nothing to do with religion. Spirituality comes from understanding life, particularly the pains and problems of life. To be kind, compassionate and considerate is the essence of spirituality. Spirituality is a kind gesture, an act, humility and a submission to the complex system of this universe." Suresh tries to practise these as much as he can in his day-to-day life. He said his propensity towards spirituality has come from his parents, who were very kind, especially to the poor.

Suresh says his understanding of God has nothing to do with spirituality. It is the power of belief in doing good which leads to one's belief in God. That there is some mysterious element which has the power to influence human thoughts and actions and cause unbelievable coincidences makes Suresh believe in the existence of a force which can be called God. A belief in some unknown force or God come only from intense spiritual beliefs and understanding.

Suresh adds, "There are no spiritual practices. Spirituality is not a prayer." For Suresh, spirituality is a matter of understanding, feeling and acting upon the particular moment, more a matter of impulse and how you respond to a particular situation. Apart from being a very successful director and actor, he is also an environmentalist who derives strength from the universe.
