National Award-winning Tamil actress Keerthy Suresh penned a strong note in support of Rashmika Mandanna after the recent deepfake controversy. The national sensation had earlier this week issued her statement after a deepfake video of her had taken social media by storm, with several leading names in the film fraternity raising their concerns over the technology posing the risk of identity theft, including iconic Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who sought for legal action. On late Wednesday evening, November 8, Keerthy Suresh took to X and wrote a powerful statement citing that the viral deepfake video is frightening adding that the individual behind it could have used the time for doing something productive. She further stated that the said technology should not create problems and pondered over whether it is a blessing or a menace, and urged the community to spread positivity and refrain from any such nonsense in the future.
Keerthy Suresh wrote, "The deep-fake video that’s going around is scary. I really wish the person who had done this could have rather used that time to do something productive and not put the people involved, into misery. I don’t understand if technology for us today is a boon or a bane. Let’s use this platform widely to only spread love, positivity, awareness, and information and not nonsense. Keerthy Suresh's statement comes after Rashmika wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the Cyberabad Police, and Maharashtra Cyber earlier this week on X, "I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused. Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft." (sic)
