A controversy has broken out after actor Suriya was mocked for height by two VJs on a TV show aired on a popular TV channel earlier this week.

The show predominantly talks about gossip and events in the film industry and has quite a fan following. In the particular episode this week, the TV anchors had spoken about the rumor of veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan being sought after for a role in Suriya’s upcoming film with director KV Anand, which at this point is being called Suriya 37.

During the show, the VJs are seen poking fun of Suriya on the basis of his height and also drawing comparisons to his Singam co-star, Anushka Shetty. And, as expected, the incident drew ire from the actor’s fans as well as many in the film fraternity.

Meanwhile, a huge number of Suriya’s fans gathered outside the TV channel’s office in Chennai today morning and are protesting the statements made against the actor on the show. When asked what their demands were, a representative from the Suriya’s fans club said, "Suriya and his family have always shown utmost respect to women. And, we are also following that. Our anger is not against the TV anchors. When a show like this is made, there will usually be a scriptwriter, a director, who will view the content before giving it a nod to be taken into production. We just want the TV channel to come forward and issue an apology since it has hurt us Suriya fans as it is not in proper taste."

Suriya, on the other hand, moments back took to his Twitter page to post his views on the incident saying, "Let us not lower ourselves to statements that lack culture. Make use of your time and energy for issues that demand importance and our society will flourish."

In addition, with the Irumbu Thirai audio launch taking place today, actor and Nadigar Sangam General Secretary has issued a statement saying a notice has been sent to the TV channel demanding an explanation over the incident.

In his statement, the TFPC President said, "The right to freedom of speech is applicable to everyone, but should not be misused. Suriya is a top rate actor and the channel also has been popular for a number of years. We all being part of the same family, there needs to be an understanding and such statements shouldn’t have been made. A notice has been sent to the channel and we now expect an answer from them,".
