Talking to National Award winning film critic Baradwaj Rangan in an exclusive interview for Galatta Plus, acclaimed filmmaker Pa Ranjith opened up for the first time about the hardships that he and his team had to overcome to release his debut movie, Attakathi. Ranjith revealed that the majority of the producers and distributors in the industry were not ready to release the film due to various reasons. Talking about it, he said, "A leading producer saw the film first and he didn't like the film. Another producer from a reputed production house saw the film and told my producer (CV Kumar) not to release the film, adding that all the money that has been spent on the film is of waste.

The first producer who saw the film told that it looked like Aaranya Kaandam and I was surprised. The worrying part is that my producer lost confidence and faith in the film and started developing doubts, after listening to these people. Later, I called Venkat Prabhu and arranged a special screening for Studio Green. Three people from Studio Green are the main reason for Attakathi seeing the light of day - Sakthi, Prabhu, and Gnanavel sir. They liked the film very much and agreed to release it. If they had not, it would have been really difficult for us.

Later, they invited all the prominent directors in their circle and screened the film. More than half of the filmmakers told Gnanavel sir not to release the film, adding that it would bring bad name to Studio Green banner. They bought the film in January and the plan was to release in March, but due to all these issues, the film released only in August. It was only in this 7 months of waiting time, I wrote the scripts of Sarpatta Parambarai and Madras". Well, it is indeed insightful and interesting to know that Attakathi defeated so many odds and came to the theatres, winning the hearts of the people.

Pa Ranjith is currently gearing up for the release of his next film, Natchathiram Nagargiradhu which is slated for release on August 31.
