It came as a major shock to Tamil cinema fans on Monday when a video of veteran character actor Thavasi went viral on social media where he is shown requesting for financial help for his cancer treatment. Having been a part of the Tamil film industry for nearly 30 years, the video left many upset and emotionally disturbed as it showed Thavasi in a weakened physical condition and all skinny contrary to his usual self. Thavasi is known prominently for his role as Soori's father in Sivakarthikeyan's Varuthapadaatha Vaalibar Sangam, directed by Ponram. His dialogue "Karuppan Kusumbukkaran" soon after became a viral meme material after the film hit theatres.

Thavasi in the video had requested for financial help in order to pay for the treatment he is undergoing so that he can recover from the health ordeal and resume acting in films. He had stated that he has acted in films for nearly three decades from Kizhakku Cheemaiyile to 'Superstar' Rajinikanth's upcoming biggie Annaatthe. Speaking about his health condition, Thavasi added that he never imagined he would be affected by a disease like cancer and is not in a position to do anything. He said that he is not able to speak properly.

Soon after the video surfaced online, many expressed their sadness at witnessing Thavasi’s plight and had conveyed their desire to help the actor. In that light, Sivakarthikeyan Fan Club President Mohan has now contributed Rs. 25,000 in person to Thavasi for his health treatment. This gesture is winning Sivakarthikeyan, his fan clubs and his fans appreciation from many on social media. More such financial help is expected from the film industry and the public as a means of support for the ailing actor.

The video also had a theatre artiste requested everyone to extend their support to the veteran actor. In the video, the theatre actor explained that Thavasi's trademark was his comedy and body language, which always floored everyone. He stated that his physical appearance has changed drastically after being afflicted with cancer. He added that Thavasi was not in a position to meet the financial needs for the cancer treatment and is why the video has been made to spread the word as much as possible.
