Mani Ratnam's epic drama magnum opus Ponnian Selvan: I has been making waves at the box office ever since it released on September 30. The film was one of the most anticipated films of the year and it was being released with the expectations. Upon its release, it is save to say that the film lived up to the expectations and exceeded it as well. The film garnered critical acclaim from fans and film critics alike praising the film for the direction, performances of the cast, score, visuals, and faithfulness to the novel.

The film is so successful and has such a craze around it that people are flocking to theatres to catch the film leading it be full house shows. the craze is so much so that theatres are giving most of its screens in order to occupy all the audience because of this. Due to this 'Ponniyin Selvan effect', films that were supposed to released this week have been postponed to November because of the the unavailability of screens. 

4 Tamil films has been postponed as a result. They are – Arun Vijay starrer Borrder, Arvind Swami-Trisha starrer Sathuranga Vettai 2, Sundar C's Coffee With Kadhal and Shiva's Kasethan Kadavulada. The only films that will be release in contention to Ponniyin Selvan are the Sivakarthikeyan starrer Prince and the Karthi starrer Sardar which are both set for a Diwali release on October 21. 
 
Ponniyin Selvan is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 of the same name. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast comprising of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban and Lal. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.
