We are officially at the end of the IPL 2020 season with the league stage matches coming to an end and the Playoffs set to begin soon! Today marked CSK & KKR's last league matches and it was already CSK's last match of the tournament as they have been knocked out with no chance to progress to the Playoffs. However, a win for KXIP would still keep them in contention for the Playoffs. MSD won the toss and asked KXIP to bat first. At the toss, Dhoni clarified that this would definitely not be his last game in the Yellow jersey, putting an end to all speculations that he would no longer play in the IPL! CSK had 3 changes to their team, while Kings XI had 2! KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal walked out to open and Mayank got going in the 1st over itself, with two 4s! Both Rahul and Chahar showed a positive approach and were belting out boundaries, before Ngidi came on to bowl the 6th over and got Agarwal bowled for 26! KXIP finished the Powerplay on 53/1. Ngidi got Rahul for his 2nd wicket in the 9th over and at the end of the 10th over, KXIP were 65/2!
Thakur bowled the 11th over and got Pooran caught behind by Dhoni for a mere 2 runs, off the 4th ball off the over! Unfortunately for KXIP, the Universe Boss Chris Gayle didn't make much of an impact and was out for 12 off 19 balls, in the very next over to Tahir. Hooda and Mandeep joined forces in the middle and began building a semblance of a partnership but Jadeja got Mandeep for 14, in the 17th over. The dangerous Neesham failed to create any impact with the bat today, as he was taken by Ngidi, when he returned to bowl the 18th over but Hooda made it a good over for KXIP with two 6s! Hooda then smashed a 4 off Thakur and brought up a fine 50 and Hooda then finished off the innings with 14 runs off the 20th over bowled by Ngidi. KXIP had reached 153/6 thanks to a blistering innings by Hooda and had set CSK a target of 154 to win. A win by CSK would knock out KXIP from the tournament and end all their chances of qualifying for the Playoffs. With Faf returning to the team, he and the Man of the Match from the last two games for CSK - Ruturaj Gaikwad, opened the innings.
As usual, CSK started off on low-key but Gaikwad showed that he was still in rich form with some lusty boundary shots. Both batsmen grew in confidence and began displaying their class and had taken CSK to 57/0 at the end of the Powerplay! du Plessis took on the role of the aggressor and raced away to 48 but fell to a very good catch by KL Rahul, to Chris Jordan. By the end of the 10th over, CSK were 84/1! With Rayudu joining Gaikwad in the middle, the two batsmen built a steady partnership and put away the bad balls for boundaries. The end seemed to be nearing for KXIP too, as they were not able to take Wickets and the CSK batsmen were getting runs comfortably. Gaikwand crunched two 4s off the 16th over bowled by Ravi Bishnoi and notched up his third successive half-century of the season. Rayudu was also matching Gaikwad's stroke for stroke and had all but wrapped up the chase by the 18th over, which went for 11 runs. With just 5 more runs to win off 12 balls, Rahul tossed the ball to Gayle and the CSK batsmen hit the required runs in the 19th over, easing to a 9-wicket win with 7 balls to spare! This meant that it was not just CSK but KXIP too, who had played their last match in IPL 2020! The Presentation was quite revealing as Faf du Plessis confirmed that he expects to play for atleast another 5 years. In an even better news, Dhoni confirmed that he too was not going to retire from the IPL and stated that he had not yet played his last game in the Yellow jersey. He reiterated that CSk would come back stronger than ever and that if the auction happens, they would slightly alter the team's core to hand over the team to the next generation. Ruturaj Gaikwad won his third consecutive Player of the Match award, after cracking his third consecutive 50 and leading his side to victory!
