Secundrabad: SBI advertisement published in an English Daily has raised eyebrows after the national bank listed 'letter issued by the National Population Register' as a valid document of KYC.

The advertisement appeared in the Times of India in Secundrabad on Sunday. The country has been in the throes of a massive civil protest ever since the Act facilitating nation-wide NPR was passed by the parliament. The ad was soon posted on Twitter by readers. Soon, some Twitter users were warning the protesters to move their money out of Indian banks saying the banks may freeze their accounts in the name of KYC.

As this began spreading, the RBI put out an explanation saying that NPR letter was only one of the documents that could be produced for the completion of the KYC process. Reportedly, NPR letter has been listed as an accepted document for KYC since 2017.

It may be noted that NPR has been active in Assam since 2013, when the Congress was in power. The BJP government intends to complete NPR along with the house listing phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the other States and Union Territories.
