Suriya's Soorarai Pottru premiered on November 12 on Amazon Prime Video as a Diwali treat and has since received massive acclaim from fans and critics alike. Declared to be one of the finest performances in Suriya’s career, the action drama directed by Sudha Kongara and featuring chart-buster music by G. V. Prakash Kumar is currently one of the most-watched Tamil ventures on any OTT streaming service after it endured several obstacles prior to its release, just as the character Nedumaran Rajangam faced in the aviation industry in the film. The euphoria hasn't yet come to an end for the Soorarai Pottru team as yet as it has now been announced that the film has joined the Oscars 2021 race in multiple categories.

Taking to their Twitter pages, Soorarai Pottru's co-producer Rajsekar Pandian and composer G. V. Prakash informed fans on Tuesday that the film has entered the Oscars 2021 race under the General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories. Rajsekar Pandian further revealed that the film has also been made available live in the Academy Screening Room starting today after it was reviewed by the Quality Control (QC) team. GV Prakash too expressed his joy on the news on his background score in Soorarai Pottru being submitted under the Best Original Score category. Check out the tweets below:

Soorarai Pottru joining the General Category for Academy Awards 2021 will no doubt come as happy news for everyone associated with the film, especially after the film skipped its theatrical release due to the coronavirus pandemic. Produced jointly by 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment banners, Soorarai Pottru was then announced to premiere on Amazon Prime on October 30, but got delayed a couple of more weeks due to a delay in obtaining the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the film revolved extensively around aviation. Despite 2020 being a year predominantly filled with grief and tragedy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Soorarai Pottru gave Tamil cinema fans plenty of reasons to cheer and the news of the film now entering the Oscars 2021 race is no doubt the icing on the cake and a proud moment for Tamil cinema.

Apart from Suriya's power-packed performance, Sudha Kongara's direction and a well-written screenplay, including GV Prakash's electrifying musical score and chart-busters, Soorarai Pottru also gained attention for its casting in the form of Aparna Balamurali, who won the hearts of fans with her dedicated show of skills, including veteran actress Urvashi's flawless execution in her act and Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal impressing fans as the villain in his Tamil debut, while Telugu actor Mohan Babu, Vivek Prasanna, Karunas among others left a lasting impression. Dubbed in Telugu as Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra, Soorarai Pottru has been inspired from the life of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of the Air Deccan airliner.
