Veteran filmmaker and actor Girish Karnad has passed away due to his prolonged illness. The National Award winning filmmaker breathed his last at his residence in Vittal Mallya Road, Bengaluru. He was 81 years old. Girish was also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards. Girish's loss is definitely huge for Indian cinema. For the Tamil audience, Girish has featured as an actor in films such as Kaadhalan, Minsara Kanavu, Hey Ram, and Chellame. He was last seen in Suriya's science fiction thriller, 24.

Some of his popular directorials in Kannada include Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Ondanandu Kodalalli, Cheluvi, Kaadu, etc. Girish is considered as one of the prolific filmmakers who holds a strong place in the art house of Indian cinema. His demise has come as a big shock and the entire Nation has been mourning his demise on Twitter. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter space to share his condolence message.

He said, "Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will continue being popular in the years to come.
