Coming soon: Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan'?

Maverick director Mani Ratnam is all set for an on screen adaptation of Kalki's epic novel 'Ponniyin Selvan'. After making several films with elements of history or mythology, this time the ace director is is planning a full-fledged adaptation of the novel. 'Ponniyin Selvan' is widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written in Tamil. It deals with the fortunes of the Chola empire during the 10th century. The story revolves around Vandiyathevan, a charming young man who comes to the Chola land to deliver a message from Crown Prince Aditya Karikalan. It was serialized in the Tamil periodical Kalki.

'Ponniyin Selvan' has been a dream for many actors and directors, including Kamal Haasan. There are also reports that Kalanidhi Maran's Sun Pictures has showed interest in producing the film, which requires a whopping Rs. 200 crores. Sources close to the director says that veteran Santosh Sivan is likely to be the cinematographer. An official confirmation is expected soon.
