Swaralaya awards announced

Noted Bollywood singer Kavita Krishnamoorthy, four-time Filmfare Award winner (1994, 1995, 1996 and 2002), has been selected for the Swaralaya-Kairali-Yesudas Award, 2008. Veteran south Indian music director M.S. Viswanathan, popularly known as "Mellisai Mannar", will also be presented the award for his lifetime contributions to music.

While announcing the awards on Thursday in Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala minister and Jury Chairman M.A. Baby told reporters that Kavita Krishnamoorthy and Viswanathan were selected unanimously by the jury on the basis of the nominations from music lovers.

Swaralaya Yesudas award is a prestigious award for music artists in recognition of their outstanding performance. The award is instituted jointly by Thiruvanthapuram-based Swaralaya (an organization that promotes music) and Kairali Channel. Awards have been given annually since 2000.

P. Jayachandran (2000), S. P. Balasubramaniam (2001), Asha Bhosle (2002), K.S. Chithra (2003), Hariharan (2004), Sonu Nigam (2005), A.R. Rahman (2006) and Shankar Mahadevan (2007) are the winners so far.
