Annaatthe has been one of the most debated films in recent times as it received mixed reviews from fans and critics. The mass masala family entertainer drama directed by Siva and produced by Sun Pictures was riding on massive hype and took a phenomenal opening across Tamil Nadu and various parts of the country. Annaatthe featured Rajinikanth once again amidst a rural backdrop for a majority of the film's duration and was a return to the roots for the actor after nearly two decades when he was seen in Padayappa in 1999 in a similar backdrop.

Earlier in the day, Rajinikanth had released a detailed voice note on the Hoote app explaining the various obstacles the Annaatthe team had come across in making the film during the pandemic. The veteran actor also spoke about how the film stood the test of time even after its release when the rains lashed the state and created hurdles for audiences from visiting theatres. Apart from Rajinikanth, Annaatthe included several big names in its ensemble cast that included Keerthy Suresh playing his sister, followed by Nayanthara as his lady-love, while Khushbu, Meena, Prakash Raj, Jagapathi Babu, Soori, Sathyan, Abhimanyu Singh, Vela Ramamoorthy, Livingston, Pandiarajan, Sathish, Redin Kingsley, among others appeared in pivotal roles.
