Stunners of 2008

Usually, big-budget films starring frontline actors overshadow films made with small budgets and new faces/ upcoming stars. But trends are changing and 2008 saw many small movies beating the odds to taste stunning success. Some of the stunners this year are:

Anjaathe: The first hit of 2008, the movie was the second venture of director Mysskin. The movie starring Narain, Ajmal, Prasanna, Vijayalskhmi and Pandiarajan, portrayed the underworld-police scenario in a realistic manner

Subramaniyapuram:This poignant tale from director Sasikumar (who even did a role in it) appealed to everyone, making it a blockbuster film evenwhile theatres were still playing grand films like Dasavathaaram!

Saroja: Since he gave 2007’s super hit Chennai 600 028, all eyes rested on Venkat Prabhu’s second directorial venture – Saroja. And the director – whose screenplays are on par with Holywood movies – did it again! Saroja about four friends getting into trouble while they go on a holiday trip, grabbed everyone’s attention. Plus the film’s peculiarities – e.g. the protagonists (who are fast friends) calling each other “Sir” instead of using names – were greatly enjoyed by the viewers.

Poi Solla Porom: This comedy caper is Priyadarshan’s first production venture in Tamil! When the Badshah of Comedy decided to remake Khosla Ka Ghosla, he chose director Vijay (of Kireedam fame) who lived up to Priyadarshan’s expectations. This new brand of comedy in which Karthik and Piya checkmated a land shark, becamethe new rage amongKollywood audiences.

Naayaghan: With the help of J.K. Riteesh’s unique mannerisms, striking resemblance to Nagarjuna (Riteesh is popularly referred to as “the next Nagarjuna” by many), neat and taut screenplay and Maria Manohar’s catchy tunes, Naayaghan became one of the grand hitsof theyear.

Ellam Avan Seyal: Released toward the end of the year, this Tamil remake of Chinthamani Kolai Case directed by Shaji Kailash, starring 10 newcomers in the lead, R.K. and Vadivelu, became a super hit because of its exciting screenplay.
