RJ Balaji became a sensation with his comedy during his days as a radio jockey, before making a transition to the silver screen as a comedian in several notable films. After a stint of providing comedic relief in films, RJ Balaji made his debut as a lead hero in last year's smash hit political satire film, LKG. Post the success of LKG, the comedian turned actor stunned fans with the announcement that he would be making his directorial debut along with NJ Saravanan for a Hindu devotional comedy film with Nayanthara in the lead role. Titled Mookuthi Amman, the project had been revealed to be a revival of the genre that enjoyed a huge popularity in the 80s and 90s.

Filming on Mookuthi Amman wrapped up earlier this year, with the film since being announced for a grand premiere this Diwali on November 14 on the DisneyPlus Hotstar VIP streaming service. There had been a lot of expectations that the film would be coming out in theatres, with the plans eventually being called off in view of the coronavirus pandemic. RJ Balaji, who has been promoting the film extensively, has stated that the film will be a perfect entertainer for families to watch together at the comfort of their homes and likewise celebrate Diwali. Produced by Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh's Vels Film International banner, promotions for the film are still being actively carried out, with DisneyPlus Hotstar VIP now releasing a special sneak peek promo video from the film featured on Nayanthara, RJ Balaji and the supporting cast members among whom include Urvashi and Thadam heroine Smruthi Venkat.

Mookuthi Amman will also see veteran actor Moulee in a major supporting role, followed by Bigil fame Indhuja and Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu stars Gautham Karthik and Yashika Aannand in cameo appearances. Girish Gopalakrishnan has composed the music for the film, with Dinesh Krishnan serving as the cinematographer and 'Stunt' Silva in charge of the action sequences. Selva RK is the editor, while Divya Nagarajan and Anu Vardhan are the costume designers with Vijayakumar serving as the art director.
