The 59th National awards for the best performers in the Indian film industry were announced today. Top Bollywood actress Vidya Balan won the Best Actress Award for her bold performance in the movie The Dirty Picture. The movie was based on the life of 80's actress Silk Smitha.

Byari, a Kannada film won the prestigious Best Feature film. The movie revolves around how the Muslim women in the Beary Muslim community get ill-treated in the name of marriage and divorce. Also, the award was shared with a Marathi film named Deool. Both the films deal with religious problems across the state.

Tamil film Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai was named as the best popular film, while its lead Appu Kutty won the award in the best supporting actor category.

Actor Girish Kulkarni won the Best Actor award for his performance in Deool.

Gurvinder Singh won the Best Director for the film Anhe Ghorey Da Daan.

Shahrukh Khan's superhero film RA.one won the award in the best special effects category.

The National award presentation ceremony will he held on May 3.

Best Costume: Neeta Lulla for Bal Gandharva (Marathi), Niharika Khan for The Dirty Picture (Hindi)

Special Jury Award: Anjan Dutta

Best Screenplay: Vikas Behl and Nitish Tiwari for Chillar Party

Best Dialogue: Girish Kulkarni

Best Bengali Film: Ranjana Ami Aar Ashbona

Best Debut Film by a director: Aranya Kaandam (Tamil)

Best Female Playback Singer: Rupa Ganguly

Best Children Film: Chillar Party

Best Chid Artiste: Partho Gupte

Special Mention: Director Shari for Adi Madhyantam (Malayalam) and Mallika for Byari (Kannada)

Best Choreography: Bosco Caesar, for ZNMD
