The Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa has officially begun filming. Chris Hemsworth took to his Twitter handle on June 1st posting a photo to social media with the film slate for the highly-anticipated Fury Road prequel, indicating that production on the project has begun. Hemsworth captioned the photo "A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins". This has generating madness across the internet. The slate in the photo was propped in the familiar Mad Max scorched desert with a backdrop of clouds. The director's name, George Miller, can also be seen on the slate. Miller, who worked on all four of the previous Mad Max films, will be returning to write and direct the project.

Furiosa is expected to serve as the origin story of Imperator Furiosa, who was portrayed by Charlize Theron to great acclaim in Mad Max 2015 revisit Mad Max: Fury Road. While plot details are scarce beyond that, Miller has indicated that the film will apparently be a saga. Theron has expressed her excitement for the film but shared she was heartbroken to not be asked back. Last year she said, “I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly”. This time the titular character will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy while Chris Hemsworth will be the antagonist of the movie for a change.

Furiosa will see the return of the Oscar-winning crew from Fury Road, including the same production designer, editor, and makeup designer. The only other cast members announced alongside Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth are Tom Burke,Nathan Jones reprising his role as Rictus Erectus, and Angus Sampson who is also returning from Fury Road. Other than that, the film’s plot is still tightly under wraps. Furiosa is expected to hit the screens on 24 May 2024.
