Karthi's 2019 turned out to be mighty successful as his Kaithi received a staggering response both critically and commercially with the actor ending the year with Thambi alongside Jyothika. His upcoming film, Sulthan, being directed by Remo fame Bakkiyaraj Kannan under SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu's Dream Warrior Pictures banner will mark the Tamil cinema debut of South Indian sensation Rashmika Mandanna. Touted to be a fun-filled action romance entertainer, Sulthan's shooting has now been completed, with Karthi sharing the news on his Twitter page on Thursday. He tweeted, "And it’s a wrap!! From the day we heard the idea three years back till today, the story continues to excite us. It’s one of my biggest productions so far. I thank the entire team for slogging it through and giving their best."

Karthi's Sulthan is one of the biggest production ventures of Dream Warrior Pictures, who are now apparently planning to bring the film out alongside 'Thalapathy' Vijay's much-awaited Master, which according to those in the film trade is being speculated for a Pongal 2021 release. However, those release plans will be viable only when the coronavirus crisis takes a turn for the better as Dream Warrior Pictures are intent on seeing the film come out only in theatres and not on any OTT platform as was being speculated some time back. It now remains to be how the COVID-19 situation improves following which we can expect an official word from producer SR Prabhu and the Sulthan team.

Last year saw Karthi’s Kaithi facing off against Vijay’s Bigil as Diwali releases with both films doing phenomenal business. Karthi's Kaithi turned out to be a highly profitable venture for Dream Warrior Pictures and they will be looking to hit the bullseye once again with their Sulthan if it goes up against Master, which was initially slated to come out on April 9, but got pushed due to the pandemic. Sulthan will include music by the Vivek-Mervin duo, with cinematography by Kaithi and Master fame Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Ruben. The film also includes veteran actor Napoleon playing the role of Karthi's father.
