Despite the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic, people are learning to live with the 'new normal'. Things are getting back to normal in almost all fields and the race for the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections are heating up! For quite some time now, there have been some ripples within the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) as to who their Chief Minister candidate would be. After their General Secretary VK Sasikala was jailed on corruption charges, current CM Edappadi K Palaniswami has been the most powerful leader in the party but former CM and current Deputy CM O Panneerselvam has also been in the reckoning. In recent times, there have been factions backing OPS to be the CM candidate while most AIADMK members wanted EPS to continue as the CM candidate! Now, the party has unanimously decided on EPS to be their CM candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections!

This decision goes to show that EPS enjoys the support of all the Cabinet Ministers, MLAs as well as the district party cadres! His announcement as the CM candidate for AIADMK was also followed by the announcement of the formation of a 11-member steering committee for the party. OPS has been demanding this for quite some time now and it has now been implemented! OPS has been the Chief Minister for 3 times in the past. Twice he took over the position when the late J Jayalalithaa had to step down due to various reasons and then again, when she passed away. However, after the last elections, EPS assumed the position and has been enjoying the support of all his party members since. OPS has often been seen as a loyalist of Sasikala and her family, who chose him to be the CM in the past!

However, OPS is said to have rebelled against Sasikala and that lead him to be ousted from the position and after a floor test, it was EPS who assumed power. Later, EPS and OPS joined forces to oust Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dinakaran from party posts and now it looks like even OPS is being sidelined by EPS. However, Sasikala is expected to be released from prison within a month and it remains to be seen what effects that could have within the AIADMK. Currently, inside sources state that OPS has 5 of his loyalists as part of the 11-member steering committee. It remains to be seen if Sasikala would allow the committee to remain once she is back as it was not part of the original party constitution. The roles and responsibilities of this committee are as yet unclear as there also separate committees to handle the upcoming elections as well as candidates selection.
