'Jai Ho' among top Hollywood words

We know that Slumdog Millionaire and its 'Jai Ho' have gone places – right from the filthy bylanes of Mumbai slums to the world's most coveted red carpet at Los Angeles. But,'Jai Ho'has just not stopped there. Overnight, it has gone into the day-to-day vocabulary of Hollywood. Two words, 'Jai Ho' (the Oscar-winning song composed by A.R. Rahman) and 'Slumdog' are rated as the top words on everyone's lips in Hollywood this year.

In a recent Global Language Monitor survey, 'Jai Ho' (meaning, 'May victory be yours') and 'Slumdog' have been ranked among other top words and phrases of Hollywood like “What doesn't kill you makes you stranger” from the Dark Knight (a parody on Nietzsche's quote) and “There are no accidents from Kung-fu Panda.”

Linguists and academicians are attributing this foreign audiences getting exposed to Indian sensibilities. Whateverthe reason, 'Jai Ho' has made India proud on the international scene and Oscar winners A.R. Rahman and Gulzar have indeed given us a new anthem inthe form of'Jai Ho'.
