India's legendary film director Mani Ratnam, widely recognized for directing the critically acclaimed films�Mouna Raagam (1986), Nayagan (1987), Anjali (1990), Iruvar (1997), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Yuva (2004), Roja (1992), Bombay (1995) and Dil Se (1998), is celebrating his birthday today.

The veteran director is currently busy with his big budget bilingual tentatively titled Ravan/ Asokavanam, being simultaneously made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. Said to be the modern adaptation of the epic Ramayana, Ravan revolves around Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, who kidnapped Sita. The story culminates with Sita taking the side of Ravana, instead of Rama who suspects her chastity after having spent so much time in Ravana’s custody.

The latest we hear is that Tollywood's new glamour sensation Priyamani is playing Surpanakha’s role! Vikram plays the villain. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are the lead pair in Hindi, while Vikram will play the lead opposite Aishwarya in Tamil. Ravana is produced by Mani Ratnam's sister Sharda under Ratnam's banner Madras Talkies.

According to sources, Mani Ratnam's next will be Rukmani, based on a rural theme. The director is said to have almost completed the script of Rukmani. A.R. Rahman will be the music director.
