Director Bharathiraja in a recent statement, detailed about the issue where Telugu groups are protesting against the screening of Vadivelu’s film, as it has been titled Tenaliraman. He said that a recent trend has started in Tamil cinema where lots of groups have started emerging and started opposing against screening of films beginning from Vishwaroopam to the recent Tenaliraman. He questioned the creative freedom that Tamil artists and directors possess in comparison to people in other countries, by quoting how Charlie Chaplin’s portrayal of Hitler wasn’t subjected to any ban. He further added that, when a film has received an approval from the censor board, it is not necessary for the film to be screened again to another group as it undermines the authority of the censor board and if such groups have any allegations, they should clarify it with the censor board instead of taking any other action.

The veteran director stated that Tenali Raman, being a famous jester of the Teugu king Krishnadevaraya's court, might have some Telugu dialogues and this cannot be quoted as a reason for assuming there might be some allegations against the Telugu race. He added that the hospitable nature of Tamilians cannot be taken advantage of and urged for all the Tamil Film fraternities to come together and put a stop to these issues that are occurring as it might happen to them also.
