Aamir as Guru Dutt?

If ever B-town wants to make an unusual, off-the-beaten-path movie, it zeroes in on none but Aamir Khan. We have seen it in projects like Lagaan, Mangal Pandey, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par andeven, the recent Ghajini. Apparently this reel-rule is going to be followed again. For who can handle with more verve and passion – at the expense of commercial gains and box office numbers – a subject so honourable and creative as Guru Dutt? Yes! Aamir Khan may likely be the next Guru Dutt on screen.

Grapevine reports say that two filmmakers, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, want to make a movie on the prolific actor-director Guru Dutt with Aamir Khan in the lead. While Mehra may base his film on Nasreen Munni Kabeer's biography of Guru Dutt, Shivendra Singh is going to draft his own story after research and consultation with the Guru Dutt family. Dutt's son Arun Dutt is said to be supportive of Shivendra Singh's biopic.

Elaboratingon the project, Singh said that the title Guru Dutt has already been registered andhe is confident of his grasp over the legend's life. He also expressed his desire to cast Aamir in the lead role. Incidentally, Aamir was also Mehra's first choice. But now that the Guru Dutt's family is backing Singh's project and since Aamir is a great admirer of Guru Dutt's sister Lalita Lajmi, the dice may be cast in Singh's favour. It seems Singh has promised the Dutt family that the film will be thoroughly biographical and not fictional.

Looks like soon we may see our dear Aamir on celluloid as Guru Dutt. And Mr. Rakeysh Mehra, youmay have to think again or hunt for another actor of Aamir's calibre.
