Six-time National Award-winning director Mani Ratnam's most ambitious film in his career, Ponniyin Selvan, began production in December last year. The reputed filmmaker has stated on several occasions that the film is his dream project, which is a joint collaboration under his Madras Talkies banner in association with Lyca Productions. The Ponniyin Selvan team had completed a major chunk of filming in Thailand last year and Pondicherry prior to the lockdown in March, which halted production of films to a large extent across the country.

An adaptation of acclaimed Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel titled Ponniyin Selvan, the upcoming epic historical film is believed to be one of the most expensive ventures in the history of Indian cinema and will feature music by Mani Ratnam's long-time collaborator and Academy Award-winning composer, A. R. Rahman. It had been revealed a while back that there will be a total of 12 songs in the Ponniyin Selvan album.

With production on Ponniyin Selvan yet to resume, actress Trisha Krishnan who is speculated to be portraying the role of Chola queen Kundhavai in the film, had posted a photo of herself taking horse riding lessons a few days back. Having said that, it is now being reported that Trisha had injured her finger during her horse riding training for the preparation of her role. Although fans are excited at the efforts the actress has been taking to get into the skin of her role and character in the film, the news of this injury will come as a bit of a disappointment. It is to be noted that Trisha had shared a picture of all the Ponniyin Selvan books a few months back and revealed that she was reading to prepare for her role in the film.

Although there is no confirmation, it is being stated that Trisha as Chola queen Kundhavai will be clashing off with Aishwarya Rai Bachahan, who is portraying the character of Nandhini Devi, the prime antagonist in the Ponniyin Selvan books. As of now, there is no conclusive word on when director Mani Ratnam will commence Ponniyin Selvan's production once again. Being made into two parts, it has been revealed that more than thirty percent of the shooting on the film has been completed and the remainder seventy percent will likely be shot only after the pending restrictions are lifted.

Apart from Trisha and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan includes several notable big stars namely 'Chiyaan; Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashwin Kakumanu, Prabhu, Nizhalgal Ravi, Jayaram, Riyaz Khan, Mohan Raman, Arjun Chidambaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Malayalam actor Lal, among others in important supporting roles, with cinematography by Ravi Varman and editing by Sreekar Prasad.
