Indians have for long been proving invaluable in various countries abroad, where they have settled in and are pursuing careers and lives for themselves! One person of Indian origin, who has been hitting the headlines in recent times is Kamal Harris, the United States Vice Presidential candidate and running-mate of Presidential candidate Joe Biden. Harris has her roots in India and Jamaica and with the voting for the elections happening currently, she is the talk of her ancestral town, in Tamil Nadu! Meanwhile, another lady of Indian origin has also not hit the headlines! Priyanca Radhakrishnan, a 2-time Member of Parliament in New Zealand, has now created history by becoming the first person of Indian origin to become a Minister, in New Zealand! Priyanca was one of the five new Ministers inducted into the Cabinet by the freshly re-inducted Labour Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
The PM announced this new, revamped cabinet and called it "incredibly diverse"! The 41-year-old Priyanca's father Radhakrishnan is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and hails from the North Paravoor region of Ernakulam district, in Kerala! After being born in India, Priyanca finished her studies in Singapore, before moving to New Zealand to take up a Master's degree in Development Studies at the University of Wellington. Priyanca then started working for the welfare of the Indian community in Auckland, as a social worker. Her foray into politics started out in 2006, when she joined the Labour Party which has Left Wing leanings. Priyanca became a Member of Parliament (MP) in Jacinda Ardern's party, in 2017! Priyanca has now served 14 years as a Labour Party leader and is a two-time MP, so far.
Having voiced out for the downtrodded, especially women affected by domestic violence and exploited migrant workers, Priyanca was appointed the Parliamentary Primary Secretary to the Minister for Ethnic Communities. She has now been inducted as the Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector; and Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment. Priyanca lives in Auckland with her husband. Reports state that the new cabinet led by Jacinda Ardern would be sworn in this Friday, following which the first Cabinet meeting is expected to happen! Priyanca's father Radhakrishnan, who has now settled in Chennai, states that this Ministerial posting was not totally unexpected, as they believed that she would get a major role in the government and that the Prime Minister herself had indicated about this. Priyanca was last in India in 2019, when unfortunately her mother breather her last. We wish Priyanca Radhakrishnan the very best!
