Journalists' wives take actors to court!

The ongoing fight between journalists and Tamil film actors took a new turn on Thursday after six reporters and the wives of two scribes filed a complaint in a court against the alleged derogatory and defamatory speeches by eight Tamil actors: Sarathkumar, Radha Ravi, Vijayakumar, Arun Kumar, Surya, Vivek, Sathyaraj and Sripriya.

The complainants said they were deeply hurt after hearing the alleged derogatory speeches by Tamil actors against journalists and their families. The petition has been admitted and the judge has posted the case for hearing Nov 13.

Thebattle began after the police arrested Dinamalar news editor for publication of a news report carrying names and photos of leading actors in Tamil cinema allegedly involved in prostitution. The report was based on the statement given by actress Bhuvaneswari (who was earlier arrested by the city police for allegedly running a high profile sex racket from her house) to the police.

Angered by the report, Nadigar Sangam filed a police complaint against the daily, which resulted in the arrest of the daily’s news editor B. Lenin from his office last week. He was imprisoned and later released on bail. In a meeting organised by SIFAA last week, six actors (Vivek, Sripriya, Vijayakumar, Arun Kumar, Sathyaraj and Suriya) spoke in a derogative manner about journalists and their family members.
